Grading System

This page describes the grading system to be used in the course. It will be very similar to the system which I used at San Jose City College in the Spring Semester of 1999, although the weights of some of the grade components will be changed slightly. Here is the grades web page from the SJCC course at the end of the semester:

SJCC Physics 2A, Spring Semester 1999, Grade Compilation
as of
June 2, 1999

This web site gives the current grade compilation for San Jose City College Physics 2A which meets at SJCC on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30pm.

As described in the class syllabus, the course grade will depend on a number of activities as follows:

Homework 10%
Lab Reports 15%
Discussion Groups 10%
Midterm Exams 30%
Final Exam 25%

Total 90%

Note: As you all know, we did not do the chat sessions, so the weighted totals of the other grade components are divided by 90 instead of 100.

This web site gives the following grade information:

  1. Grading criteria for each activity.
  2. Method of calculation of Final Grade
  3. Tables which show student grades earned to date and average grades for each activity
  4. Compilation table which shows average grades for each activity and the weighted averages for all activities. This weighted average is the course grade to date. At the end of the course, when the grades for the Final Exam have been entered, this weighted average will be the Final Grade for the course.

To convert the numerical grades for each of the activities to a letter grade the following table will be used.

Points Letter Grade

81-100 A
71-80 B
61-70 C
51-60 D
below 51 F

Grading criteria for each activity:

Homework: The grade for a particular homework assignment will be the % of correct answers compared to the total number of questions or problems. In some cases, where grading time is limited, credit may be given for all questions answered or problems done, regardless of the answer obtained.

Lab Reports: Points will be allocated according to the quality and completeness of the presentation of each of the sections below:

  1. Statement of Objective 10
  2. Description of Experiment 20
  3. Discussion of Problems 20
  4. Display of Data (Tables and/or Graphs) 20
  5. Conclusion-What was Learned? 30

Discussion Groups: Points will be allocated according to the quality of participation described below:

Signs onto group but does not make meaningful comments: 51-60 points total, D
Signs on and posts some comments and/or questions: 61-70 points total, C
Signs on and is an active participator: 71-80 points total, B
Signs on, participates and significantly; helps other students learn the material: 81-100 points total,A

Chat Sessions: Same criteria as Discussion Groups above, but not used this semester.

Midterm Exams: The grade for each midterm exam will be the % of correct answers compared to the total number of questions or problems. There will be four midterm exams, but the lowest score will be dropped. The three remaining midterms will count 10% each for a total of 30%

Final Exam: The grade for the final exam will be the % of correct answers compared to the total number of questions or problems. It will cover all the material presented in the course.
